Explore the Old Port in Portland, with its museums, shops and restaurants, or stay on Peaks Island for a relaxing vacation.  Peaks Island is about 5 miles in circumference and is great for biking, walking and boating.  Visit the 5th Maine regiment Civil War Museum and WWII bunkers, and learn of the island's long military history.  Kayak rentals and lessons are easily available, and bike rentals as well.  Freeport, with the landmark L.L. Bean store open 24/7, is about 20 miles from Portland.  Freeport is also a site for other upscale shopping.  Many artists make their home on Peaks, and you will find studios and shops open during your stay.
